If you’re a small business owner trying to establish your online presence, chances are you’ve probably heard about how important Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is. It’s no secret that SEO is one of the key components to growing your business online—it’s what helps you rank higher in search results so that you can be found by more customers.
SEO and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) have incredible value for small businesses, but many small business owners struggle to understand what SEO really is and how to implement it into their marketing strategy. At NK Digital Marketing, we know that a comprehensive SEO strategy goes beyond basic keyword research. Read on to learn more!
It includes your online listing information.
Did you know that your Google listing is an important part of your business’s SEO? Well, now you do! A Google My Business account is one of the simplest ways you can help boost your search rankings, especially for local searches. Include detailed information about your business, such as the services you provide and make sure all of the contact information is filled out and up to date.
Top tip: Use your business name when responding to positive reviews, but leave it out when responding to negative reviews! This will help reduce the association of your business with negative verbiage.
It includes your social media posts and online content.
Any time you post to your social media profiles or website, you’re boosting your SEO. Consistent posting not only shows your existing and future customers that you’re engaged and active, but it also helps increase your search rankings, too. Even just having social media profiles across the most common platforms—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn—can help.
Top Tip: Every time you post a blog to your website, you’re adding another page of content for search engines to crawl and index. Consider posting once a month (or even better, once per week!) to improve your site’s SEO.
It’s not as simple as copy/pasting keywords into your website.
Don’t get us wrong—keyword research is important and your website’s text should always be written with top-searched phrases and keywords in mind. However, proper SEO is more than just copying and pasting keywords throughout your site. Keywords should be incorporated organically as if they were part of a normal conversation. This will help reduce the risk of “keyword-stuffing” (such as starting every sentence in a blurb with the same phrase) and will make your website more appealing to readers.
Top Tip: Don’t try to game the system! Search engines can tell when text is hidden on your site, such as changing the color to match the background or reducing the font size to zero. Hiding text for the purpose of SEO can actually have the opposite effect, and will likely earn you a penalty from Google.
